With a minus 10+ wind chill factor here in Holland, in door time has some attraction. It is fabulous to relive the journey and to remember what was in my head as I travelled along. Clearly at the beginning of the journey across the Hay Plain it seemed to be all about the road !!

When you take the color away usually you take noise away. What is left is pure light and form – this often leads to a much more emotive shot. Silvi Glauttauer once gave me some great advice to improve my Black and White photography, here it is. Shoot in RAW but set your viewfinder to BW. This helps you to see in Black and White while you are out and about shooting. Because you shoot in RAW you can process later using your preferred BW converter .

Photography can be many things. A visual diary of events in your personal life, a social documentary of the world at any given time, beautiful landscapes, creative interpretations of light etc. I love all photography, and sometimes I like to it as a way to present a message – something I feel strongly about or believe in -something to stimulate people to think about. Below is one of 6 images I did for a recent exhibition called RED (curated by Davida Penny). The title of the image is ’Hands Off ‘and the technique I used was photographic montage with the red colour coming from the colour of my own blood. With a new Pope on the horizon and recent coverage about child abuse and the exclusion of certain groups of people – I felt it was a good time to repeat the message ‘hands off our kids’. Not to offend anyone, but just to share my hope that this time we may get a more progressive Pope; a Pope who is inclusive and loving of all people, and one who does not shy away from taking responsibility for the wrong that has been done. Lets aim for a world where we all respect and accept each other.

If you want to see the rest of the images in the Red exhibition just go to the images section.

My shutter buddy Annette and I take turns in setting a theme to shoot to. This time Annette chose “Ribbons” and I have chosen the ribbons of sand on Bendalong Beach as my image. Having a photo buddy to challenge motivate and keep you honest is a great way to become a better photographer. Shooting to a theme is also a fabulous discipline to practise – makes you think, to nut out how you will approach the theme, to contemplate and envisage what your shot may look like. It helps you MAKE a photo and not take a photo – a photo that will have more of you in it than just your eyes. Get a good shutter buddy ( like I have ) and you have the added advantage of gaining a friend for life as well.
